OSWEGO WEST PIERHEAD LIGHTHOUSE
Oswego, New York 1934
The Oswego lighthouse is located at the mouth of the Oswego River on Lake Ontario. There have been three lighthouses at Oswego. The first was erected on the East Side of the river near Fort Ontario in 1822 and consisted of a stone tower and keepers cottage. The Keeper's cottage from 1822 still stands there today and serves as the residence of the Fort director. The original light was replaced in 1836 by an octagonal, gray stone light erected on the old west pier. This lighthouse remained in service until 1930 at which time it was torn down. The current lighthouse was erected in 1934 at the end of the new West pier and contains a rotating forth order Fresnel lens with red panels on the lantern windows. The structure is currently owned and maintained by the United States Coast Guard and is not open to the public. The light is still active today, having been automated shortly after a 1942 accident, which killed several Coast Guardsman while changing Keeper's. Although the lighthouse is not accessible to the public, scenic views of the light can be obtained from Fort Ontario or Oswego's Breitbeck Park.

SELKIRK LIGHTHOUSE
Port Ontario, New York 1838
The Selkirk lighthouse is located at the mouth of the Salmon River on Lake Ontario. It was erected here in 1838 with the anticipation of economic growth in the area. At the time the harbor was reported to have sufficient anchorage for up to thirty ships. But the railroad later bypassed the area and was routed through Pulaski, several miles to the east. Due to this and the silting at the mouth of the river, the anticipated growth never took place, and the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1859. Selkirk lighthouse is unique because it is one of only four, which still contain the original old style lantern from 1838. Most lighthouses were retrofitted in the 1850's - 1860's with the modern Fresnal lenses, but Selkirk was removed from service prior to being upgraded.
OLD FORT NIAGARA LIGHTHOUSE
Lewiston, New York 1872
Fort Niagara is a National Historic Landmark located at the mouth of the Niagara River, which connects Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The fort was constructed by the French in 1726 to monitor fur trade in the Great Lakes basin. The first Fort Niagara light was built on top of the Fort in 1781 and was the first lighthouse on the Great Lakes. The light was removed from service in 1814 and not replaced until 1823 when a light with a wooden tower was built atop the mess house of the fort. The mess house was converted into officers quarters in 1868, and due to the deteriorated condition of the wooden tower the decision was made to construct a new light outside the Fort. Placed in service in 1872, the current lighthouse is located on the riverbank just south of the fort. It is built of limestone with a 50 foot octagonal tower. The small attached structure provided a work area for the light keepers and is now used to house a small museum, and information center. The light remains active and is maintained by the United States Coast Guard.

The U.S. Government erected the first lighthouse here in 1827 to guide ships into the St. Lawrence and it survived until the construction of the present tower in 1854. The lighthouse currently serves as a youth hostel and the grounds are open to the public.
